Mel Robbin’s Let Them Theory: Simple Tools for Real Change

I listened to Oprah’s podcast interview with Mel Robbins. The only time I’d heard of Mel Robbins before the hype of her new book was when she featured a guest that directly attacked the business I represent.

At that time, I immediately didn’t like Mel Robbins or her guest (whose name escapes me).

Now, my eyes have been opened to a lot of things.

While I still don’t agree with her guest and believe there are a lot of risks and not a lot of research behind those opinions, Mel Robbins is onto something.

Regardless, if you are a Democrat or Republican, you like Oprah or you don’t, YOU are in control of your life.

In her new book, The Let Them Theory, Robbins simplifies a message everyone needs to hear: “Let Them” and “Let Me.”

Obviously, I haven’t read the book (as of the writing of this post, it wasn’t out yet). However, when I listened to Oprah’s podcast, who clearly got the Advanced Readers Copy, I know Robbins is right. The foundation of what she stands for is spot on: YOU are in control of every moment, every day, and you are not stuck.

Does that mean that everything that you want to happen will happen when and how you think it will happen? Absolutely not.

But it does mean you can create an environment where what you want to happen will happen. You can create an environment where everything happens for you rather than to you. And, when you do, the magic happens.

The when and how, in my belief, are in the hands of God but you can ask for what you want.

What is The Let Them Theory?

Oprah and Mel aptly cite and summarize incredible insights from the book. Mel talks honestly about her own experiences and how many times in her life she tried to take control of any and every aspect of a situation, much to the detriment of everyone around her. Again, I didn’t know much about Mel Robbins until I listened to this podcast but the stories she told were eerily familiar.

Oh wait, that’s me.

At least it was and now, I’m working on it (i.e., The Happy Life Agenda).

The Let Them Theory, according to Mel is essentially a two-part system for overcoming anxiety, fear, frustration, jealousy and all those other “less than” feelings and characteristics that keep us from being who we are, fulfilling our purpose, and achieving greatness.

The first step is to say to yourself “let them,” whenever someone or some situation is out of your control: co-workers who believe they could run the whole company? Long lines at the grocery store because of perceived inefficiencies with management? A child who wants to wear mismatched clothes to school?

Sit back, relax and “let them” do it all: let the co-workers talk, the line lag, and your kid express herself. Just let them. Because, really, can you control it? And if you are trying, what is that doing to you?

Why Are You So Tired All The Time?

Mel goes on to explain that there is a second part to that theory, “Let me.”

She says this is the most important because it is where you empower yourself. In her book, she states, “Let Me live my life in a way that makes me proud. Let Me make decisions that align with my values. Let Me take risks because I want to. Let Me follow the path my soul is turning me toward.”

The control and anxiety are often about competition, but when you “let them” be and let yourself focus on your own goals—abundance exists, there is something for everyone.

The Let Them Theory drops on December 24, 2024—the perfect last minute stocking stuffer for anyone who is thinking about change, ready for change, or feels stuck and doesn’t know where to start. I expect that I will pick up a copy and you will see these theories applied and discussed on The Happy Life Agenda too.
